The Final Capdown (Part 2): Pictures from their last ever gig!

12 Jun

Despite it’s suggestive title, The Pitz in Milton Keynes is anything but…It’s in fact, a huge, shiny stage, deceivingly housed in a smart leisure center where nice, affleunt people from the area of Buckinghimshire go to indulge in their weekly sports. So it was only natural, standing outside the building we stroked our chins and figured, is this really the place? Observing the crowd outside the leisure center of nicely dressed kids and 20 somethings in a handful of Capdown t-shirts we thought…yeah, this is the place.

The leisure center was swarming with people outside and inside the building. Having mooched around for a while we managed to catch the last half of the set by Vanilla Pod…I could have sworn they had split up! The Vanilla Pod set was nice and amiable but evidenetly, it was Capdowns night, so people were conserving their energy.

Then the lights went down and a monstrously excessive amount of smoke dropped down from the ceiling of the Pitz. The previously subdued crowd gathered, and the excietment began to grow. Capdown launched into their set playing old favourites such as ‘Headstrong’, ‘Unite to Progress’ and ‘Cousin Cleotis’, followed by newer songs such as ‘Surviving the Death of a Genre’ and ‘Keeping up appearances’. Despite the fairly novel experience of air conditioning, the pit still managed to feel like a sauna and it wasn’t long before the crowd surfing started.

As usual Capdown gave it their all which was both a shame and a bonus. It was a shame that Capdowns last gig felt like every other gig they had played before. There was no significant marker of their last show, other than a final phtograph at the end of the show. But at the same time, it was a good thing, because Capdown’s popularity was largely based on their high octane, energetic performances, and thankfully this hasn’t changed that much over the years.

Capdown finished their last ever show with classics ‘Bitches in Nike Shoes’ and ‘Ska Wars’ which caused an unnatrual erruption of skanking. The show ended, a drum was chucked into the audience, and everyone left sweaty and elated, more elated than sad. It is pretty sad though, Capdown were one of the biggest underground punk bands. Oh well…
