Brum Punx

Brum Punx, a page dedicated to all that is punk, ska, reggae related in Birmingham and the West Midlands. Not an exhaustive guide but a guide. We would produce an entire guide for the UK but it would involve locking ourselves into an isolation booth and never seeing the light of day again. We welcome your efforts though!

If you would like to add more information, email us: theboss@threebasics.co.uk. Bear in mind though we have no interest in advertising you, if thats your intention go away. We’re interested in DIY artists, bands, venues, nights and promoters.

Venues:

The Adam and EveBradford Street, Birmingham, B12 OJD. The Adam and Eve regularly has gigs on, ranging from acoustic to punk to blues. It’s big, red and on the corner. Nice cosy atmosphere. Get there on the 50 bus which picks up outside Carrs lane church, opposite Moor St Station.

The Wagon & Horses - 28 Adderley Street, Birmingham, B9 4ED. We <3 the Wagon. It has an upstairs for gigs, a garden for dub and reggae, and a downstairs for the locals to have a pint of the usual. Great for gigs that go on till the early hours without courting of undesirables. Not to mention their vehemently anti-racist! Also comes with sound engineer (Dodgy, but not dodgy!) and no fee for room hire. I believe the 60 bus goes past there but don’t quote us like.

Scruffy Murphys – Newton Street, Dale End, Birmingham, B4 7LN.
The legendary Scruffy Murphys. Gigs on every week, as well as being home to Punk and Ska at Scruffys. Primarily a rock pub so expect er, a rock pub. Lovely folk. Lovely Place. It’s on the same road as the old Birmingham Academy, within walking distance of all buses and birmingham train stations…unless you have no feet. Then it isn’t.

Swinging Sporran
– Priory Queensway, Birmingham, B4 7LL. Located behing the old Academy, it’s next to the Oasis superstore hipster hangout. Hosts many, many wonderful punk shows. Again it’s with walking distant of central Brimingham.

The Asylum – 38-43 Hampton Street. Hockley. Birmingham B19 3LS Home of the occasional ‘bigger’ punk shows. About a five/ten minute walk from Snow Hill Station.

The Rainbow – 160 High Street, Deritend, Birmingham, B12 0LD. An nice independant pub thats pretty awesome. Down the road from the Wagon. Host a wide range of DJ’s and other types. Not a specifically rock or punk venue but that’s irrelevant.

The Roadhouse – Wharfside Leisure Complex, Lifford Lane, Stirchley, Kings Norton, Birmingham, B30 3DZ A bit of a hard one to find, but one that is definitely worth the find. A nice warm atmosphere with a diverse group of locals. Hosts a different range of night including the much loved open mic night. Get the 45 or 47 bus from Stephenson street. Get off after the bridge onto Lifford Lane. Walk past the children gym and down the dark path beside the river.

Hare and Hounds – 106 High Street, Kings Heath, Birmingham, B14 7JZ. A deceivingly big venue with at least two rooms for you to ‘twist and shout’. Hosts a wide variety of shows including the regular Friendly Fire Nights. One of them upscale pubs though so wipe your shoes clean. Catch the 50 or 35 bus from Carrs Lane Church in Birmingham.

Nights:

Scruffy Punks – Monthly night started by and featuring DJ’s SMIJ and Miss Siren, and Brum Punk Alumni Mark Detrimental. The night also has gigs on every now and then. Every night is free, and occasionally you even get a punk rock raffle. Night is held at Scruffy Murphys. And it’s well worth the visit.

Skanking Dub Beats – ‘An independant live soundsystem, currently based in Birmingham. A tip top night, newly housed in the New Inn in Balsall Heath. Lovely dub, ska and reggae.

Friendly Fire Sessions/Jam Jah Sound Reggae, roots, live singers at the Hare and Hounds and Bull’s Head in Mosely, respectively. Always a top night out. Chilling out till the early hours. Good fun.

Heducation Hip hop, funk and break beats night. Nice chilled out times. At the Rainbow, in Digbeth.

Broken Amp Acoustic A weekly night promoted by Rich Capone (even though the Capones are dead). Features good Brummingham talent of various musical stylings. Held at the Adam and Ever.

Brum Punx Picnic A Brum Family Affair held every year. One of the best weekends of the year.
